Music Videos Research

[30/8/22]

For this class, we were given the assignment to pick our favorite music video, find the director of that music video and research on their directing style. Then we were to make a presentation about the elements that the director that were in repetition and the noticeable differences in their music videos.

In my case, my favorite music video that I chose was Gods Menu by Stray Kids. This video is mine and many other's favorite video too seeing as it has 356Million+ views,  and for a number of a reasons too. This, as I found out later, was because of the special elements the director, Bang Jae-Yeob, incorporated into it. After choosing this song, I started diving deeper into Bang Jae-Yeob's portfolio and realized that his music videos were very similar to each other in terms of production style rather than aesthetic.

I had made this presentation with diligence as it was the first presentation of the year and it had something personally linked with us as individuals as we had to chose the director of our favorite song. I had made all the gifs in the presentations myself by downloading each music video listed in the presentation. These really helped explaining the differences and similarities in each of Bang's music videos. The presentation can be viewed here.

These are pictures of me giving the presentation in front of my class and few others who weren't part of the class but were there to join as audience. Sir graded my presentation a 19.999/20, a result of his sense of humor.

I personally benefitted a lot from researching and making this presentation mainly because it allowed me to watch my favorite music videos from a producing point of view, instead of my usual consumer point of view. It heightened my knowledge about film making as I dissected the production process. I'm sure I'll be able to apply what I learned into my own final music video.
